"Osakunnan sohvien kulutus on suoraan verrannollinen sivistymisyrityksiin. Luulisin näin. Mitä enemmän kuluttaa osakunnan sohvaa, sitä enemmän sivistyy jollain tasolla. Ja mitä vähemmän kuluttaa osakunnan sohvaa, sitä enemmän sivistyy jollain toisella tasolla."

TVO - A Students' Club for Ultimate Degeneration

What is TVO?

It looks like a rock club. Sometimes it seems to be a semi-secret student community lurking in its underground cellar club.

TVO is the most versatile club in Turku University. The purpose of this society is to promote students' possibilities to do whatever they like. The club is open every day.

What to do?

You can, for example, play a pinball game, have a prolonged scientific debate or listen to a pseudoscientific monologue, drink coffee and tea, have a cold beer, or you can just pop in for a table soccer match.

For coming gigs and other events check http://www.myspace.com/tvoturku.

As a member of TVO, you can enjoy Finnish academic traditions which include decorous parties (the picture below), excursions around the province and yachting in the Finnish archipelago. In the traditional parties of TVO, the young students and the old scholars are happily mixed up together.

TVO is a nice place enjoy some idleness

Being idle is good for your creativity. The TVO club room is like a living room for many students, some of which have even been in residence here. Anyway, it's better than the quarters which most students can usually afford (ie. more than a place to sleep).

The organisation is going through changes. TVO has run a legendary music club for nearly 50 years until June 2010, when TVO was vulgarly evicted from its previous location by the ex-landlord Turku Student Village Foundation. There were gigs and other events several times every week. A multitude of rock and punk bands from around the world visited Turku and played in our living room, and occasionally there were a lot of audience as well.

At the moment of writing (8th June 2010) it's unclear how TVO will continue creating cultural events. TVO still has all the equipment needed to organise a party and we know how to use them as well. Unfortunately the current clubroom is not completely suitable for big public events without a large scale renovation.

How to enter the TVO?

You do not have to be a member of TVO to participate in most of the events or to visit the club room. Just stop by and check the place.

All students at the University of Turku or the Åbo Akademi University can join the TVO. But it's not for free, in 2010 the membership fee is five euros.
